Unearthing the Colossal Tooth: Brazil’s Titanosaur Makes History


In a groundbreaking discovery, scientists from Brazil’s Federal Triangular University (UFTM) have confirmed the existence of the largest titanosaur tooth ever recorded. The tooth was originally unearthed during excavations in the Serra da Galga region of Uberaba, Minas Gerais, a decade ago. However, the research team has only recently concluded their comprehensive study, which has now been published.

The tooth, which measures an impressive 6.2 centimeters in diameter, is estimated to belong to a titanosaur that stood about 8 centimeters tall including the stem’s corm. Its size is indicative of it being the largest known titanosaur tooth to date. Thiago Marinho, a renowned paleontologist from UFTM, provided further insights regarding the discovery. Marinho explained that the tooth was found in the same location as the bones belonging to the Uberabatitan ribeiroi, the largest dinosaur species ever uncovered in Brazil. The Uberabatitan ribeiroi is thought to have measured a staggering 27 meters in length.

Despite the proximity and the resemblance to the Uberabatitan ribeiroi, it is challenging to definitively confirm whether the tooth actually belongs to that particular species. Marinho, however, suggests that due to its remarkable size and classification as a giant titanosaur, it is highly probable that the newly described tooth originated from the Uberabatitan ribeiroi.

The historic titanosaur tooth now holds a prominent place in UFTM’s “Llewellyn Ivor Price” Paleontology Research Center, recognized as one of the most prestigious paleontological collections in Latin America. The collection has garnered considerable attention from scholars and experts from around the globe, solidifying UFTM’s reputation as a leading institution in paleontological research.

Uberaba itself is renowned for its significant contributions to paleontological studies in Brazil. The city boasts the presence of the esteemed Dinosaur Museum, which serves as a major attraction in the area.
